Abdul Qayyum Sher was born in Kohat in 1921. This city is now in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, which was then a part of British India.
He was brought up in England and was about to attend Cambridge University when the Second World War broke out. Instead, he joined the British Indian Army and served in the Baluch Battalion. He was stationed in Burma to fight against the Japanese forces and was wounded during the war.
After independence and the partition of India and Pakistan, he served in the Pakistani Army rising to the rank of Brigadier.
